So NYC has a lot to offer and especially during the summer time. This year I decided to look into the River to River Festival. They have quite a few events that are organized through out the downtown NYC area.
Last Thursday, July 1st, I went with a few friends to check out the blues concert that was organized by R2R at the Wagner Park in Battery Park City. The performer was John Hammond who I personally have never heard of or listened to but then again my taste in music consists of Linkin Park and Eminem so that was expected.
The environment was really relaxed and everyone enjoying the show were sprawled out onto the grass or sitting along the benches on the edge of the small park. We arrived a few minutes after the performance had started but we were able to find a decent spot on the grass to hang out and enjoy our time. The performance was approximately an hour long, which lasted right up until sunset.
Listening to a Blues performance in person for the first time, I think it was very good but then again I am not a great judge of these things. No matter, we enjoyed the performance and the environment, lest for one thing, the CBS 2 Helicopter that flew over to cover the gathering, drowning out the music in the loud sounds from its wings. Some guy sitting near us flipped it the bird when it flew over us a few times. I hope they got that on tape.
After the performance, we walked north along the Hudson river, up to my old high school, Stuyvesant. We passed by the marina where all the sail boats are docked. We saw some people play a pick up game of volleyball and vowed that we would come down to play there as well at some point. when we got up to my high school, my friend had a realization that they can watch the Macy's fireworks from the park on July 4th. I think they eventually watched the fireworks from that spot and it turned out to have a decent vantage point. We eventually prayed in the park before heading off towards the subway station and back to our respective home boroughs/city.
