So I found out this morning that there is a free performance by One Republic at Bryant Park at 8:30 pm. I get extremely excited since I love their songs and would love to hear them in person.
A friend of mine got to Bryant park an hour or so before the performance and got a good spot on the lawn near the front. After taking care of some stuff at my apt, I get to Bryant Park at around 8:30 thinking that it would be packed but it hardly looked like anyone cared about the performance to show up. I was surprised but I chalked it up to the heat wave.
Some DJ from Z100 came on stage and started to introduce another band, Alpha Rev (I had to look it up again to remember it). So this band sounded very similar to One Republic so we figured that that was why they were performing as opener to the main performance. And then the DJ dropped the big news, the lead singer of O.R. has laryngitis(?) and they will not be performing.
That just killed it for me. I was really hoping to hear them in person. Oh well, if the guy really has laryngitis I hope he gets well soon. Although, since they knew ahead of time and didn't announce it, this was a really messed up marketing ploy to get people to stick around. We ended up staying for Alpha Rev performance just because we had already made the trek to the park.
On a side note, this was actually the world premiere for Sorcerer's Apprentice, a movie starring Nic Cage and various other talent. So the reason I mention that is they actually had some of the cast on stage. Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer were there. Other cast there included Teresa Palmer, Jay Baruchel, and Alfred Molina.
